Ape House: A NovelI was lucky to spend a few days at Book Expo America last week. Not only did I get to see the bloggers who I met last year, I was also able to meet up with some new people I only know through my blog. It is so nice to put faces to the names of the many bloggers I’ve follow throughout the years. Plus I got to add some new blogs to my Bloglines and look forward to stopping by each and every one to say “remember me?”

Of course, since it is a book conference I came home with quite a few books. Most notably, I got to meet Allison Win Scotch, author of the new book The One That I Want (and who had guest posted on my blog last year) and Sara Gruen (of Water for Elephants fame) who signed an ARC of her new book Ape House, which will be out in September!

While traveling back and forth on the train from New Jersey each day, I had Dennis Lehane’s novel Shutter Island to keep me company. I plan on on writing a review of the book after I watch the Martin Scorsese adaptation, which comes out on DVD next week, but in the meantime can tell you all that the book is one hell of a thrill ride! I’m curious to see how the film compares to the book and will share my thoughts will all of you soon.

Whew, it’s been a busy couple weeks at my house and even though I’ve been able to keep up with reading, my review writing has fallen behind. In the next few weeks I should have reviews up for Anna Godbersen’s The Luxe, Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella and Scones and Sensibility by Lindsay Eland.

In the meantime though, I am gearing up for Book Expo America this week. I’ll be heading into the city on Wednesday and Thursday to meet up with some bloggers, attend events, get some author authorgraphs and have a sneak peek at all the excited books coming out this year. I even had these really cool MOO cards printed out with my blog name and address. The cards have photographs that I have taken of the books in my house (some of the same photos that are in my blog header). I’m really happy with the way they turned out.

I hope you all have a wonderful week and I should be back in a few days with the scoop from BEA!

Last spring I had the pleasure of attending Book Expo America the largest publishing event in America. Having never met another book blogger face to face or attended a book conference, I was a bit nervous about going. It was the first time that a number of book bloggers were attending BEA and also one of the few times that they had a panel to discuss the impact of book blogging on the publishing industry in which I was asked to be one of the speakers.

This year, book bloggers will play an even more important role at Book Expo America, which takes place on May 25 – 27, 2010 at the Javits Center in New York City. To add to the excitement, a Book Blogger Convention will take place immediately after BEA on Friday, May 28th. A lot of you may be asking yourself whether or not it’s worththe trip into the city to attend BEA and Book Blogger Con and I’m hear to encourage you to come andjoin us for a whirlwind few days of bookish fun.

I was asked by the organizers of the Book Blogger Convention to share with my readers something about my experience at BEA last year. A few bloggers have already shared helpful tips on what to bring and wear to make the experience at BEA a great one. So instead of re-hashing the tips those great ladies shared with all of us, I’m hear to tell you to go to BEA and the Book Blogger Con because it’s FUN!

It’s FUN to meet celebrities (here’s a picture of Julianne Moore signing her children’s book for me)!

It’s FUN to get the newest books way before the publishing date (here is my coveted copy of Catching Fire, which I got at BEA and then read while on a cruise last summer).

Normally when I participate in book tours I write a detailed review of the book the tour company has sent me. This time I’ve decided to do something a bit different. I’ve included a blurb from Publishers Weekly about the book below, but figured I would make the main focus of this post about the author chat experience.  Last month my book club had the pleasure of speaking with author Lisa See after reading her newest novel Shanghai Girls.

Shanghai Girls: A Novel

The soft spoken Lisa spent almost an hour talking about her various books to the women in my club. We found out about her family history (Lisa’s great-grandfather was Chinese) and how her own relationship with her sisters inspired her to write her newest novel.

We also learned that Lisa took her own family transcripts of time spent on Angel Island as a basis for the story of her Pearl and May in Shanghai Girls. Never heard of Angel Island?  According to this website, from 1910-1940 Chinese immigrants were detained and interrogated at Angel Island immigration station in San Francisco Bay. U.S. officials hoped to deport as many as possible by asking obscure questions about Chinese villages and family histories that immigrants would have trouble answering correctly. Apparently Angel Island was created when immigration laws were passed because American workers were upset that Chinese workers would do their jobs for less wages. I had first heard of Angel Island while watching the PBS miniseries Becoming American The Chinese Experience but it was just so interesting to hear Lisa talk about her own families experience while being detained.

Lisa was even nice enough to answer questions about one of her earlier novels, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan as three of us had read it previously and had questions about her extensive research of the book. I also found out that the village where Snow Flower was based on is close to the region of China where my youngest daughter was born. I was able to share a bit about my own trip to the cities of Nanning and Guilin in south-west China with Lisa and my book club.

We also found out that Lisa is the author of seven books, including a work of non-fiction called On Gold Mountain: The One-Hundred-Year Odyssey of My Chinese-American Family which chronicles Lisa’s remarkable family history. I’ve already added that one to my wishlist!

On Gold Mountain: The One-Hundred-Year Odyssey of My Chinese-American Family

Lisa is currently almost two hundred pages into writing a sequel to Shanghai Girls, where she will focus on the next five to seven years of Pearl and May’s lives. Lisa also shared with us the possible title of her novel (which we all agreed would be a perfect fit) but don’t think I can share it online since she hasn’t gotten the thumbs up from her publisher yet!

All and all it was another successful author chat. If you’ve yet to experience an author chat with your book club, I would highly recommend doing so. A lot of authors have sections on their websites dedicated to setting up book club chats. With a little creative coordinating, your book club could have the chance to talk directly with an author and get a real glimpse into the life of a writer.

Thank you TLC Book Tours for sending all of my book club members a copy of Shanghai Girls to read and to Lisa See for taking time out of her busy schedule to chat with us. To find out more about Lisa See check out her website here.

ABOUT SHANGHAI GIRLS (FROM PUBLISHERS WEEKLY):

See (Peony in Love) explores tradition, the ravages of war and the importance of family in her excellent latest. Pearl and her younger sister, May, enjoy an upper-crust life in 1930s Shanghai, until their father reveals that his gambling habit has decimated the family’s finances and to make good on his debts, he has sold both girls to a wealthy Chinese-American as wives for his sons. Pearl and May have no intention of leaving home, but after Japanese bombs and soldiers ravage their city and both their parents disappear, the sisters head for California, where their husbands-to-be live and where it soon becomes apparent that one of them is hiding a secret that will alter each of their fates. As they adjust to marriage with strangers and the challenges of living in a foreign land, Pearl and May learn that long-established customs can provide comfort in unbearable times. See’s skillful plotting and richly drawn characters immediately draw in the reader, covering 20 years of love, loss, heartbreak and joy while delivering a sobering history lesson. While the ending is ambiguous, this is an accomplished and absorbing novel.

Happy (almost) Sunday! I’m posting my Sunday Salon a little early since I probably won’t have much computer time tomorrow.

I hope you all had a great week. It’s been busy (and quite messy around here) as the building of my addition is chugging along. The headers are in the ceiling and the space has opened up quite a bit. To get a perspective, take a peek at the size of my kitchen, living room & dining room from my front door in this picture:

Below is a picture I took on Friday from the same location. As you can see, the interior wall and back wall have been removed and it is now one big room. You see where that bright light is sitting? That’s pretty much where the back wall used to be:

The plumber has finished and the electrician is almost done so we should be ready for the inspection on Tuesday. Once we are done with that, the room will be insulated and sheet rocked! You can also see all the wood stacked up in the middle of the living room – that’s for the wood floor that will extend through the entire room.

When I wasn’t busy tiptoeing around the workers in my house, I was eagerly anticipating a wonderful package from Random House and TLC Book Tours that I just couldn’t wait to share with all of you. I received an e-mail from the wonderful Lisa over at TLC Book Tours to see if I would be interested in reviewing Shanghai Girls: A Novel by Lisa See here on my blog in January. When I wrote back to tell Lisa that my book club had just picked Shanghai Girls to read next, she contacted the publisher and ten brand spankin’ new copies were sent to my house! I’m now handing them out to the women in my book club and we are all really looking forward to reading this book. It is the second See book that we’ve read as a group (Snow Flower and the Secret Fan was the first one) and this time we are all crossing our fingers that the author will be calling in to our meeting! I’ll be sure to let you all know how our book club meeting turns out when it’s my turn to review Shanghai Girls.

Shanghai Girls: A Novel

I also finished up Now & Then by Jacqueline Sheehan (another TLC Book Tour read) and cannot wait to gush about this book to all of you later this month. I really loved the story and characters and would highly recommend it if you are looking for a great story about time travel, Irish history and a bit of romance.

Well, we are headed out to dinner with some friends tonight, so I’m signing off. I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully: A Freckleface Strawberry StoryOne of my favorite things to do in the evening is to sit down with my girls and read to them. With my oldest now seven and a reader herself, we have a lot of fun picking out books together. When I received Julianne Moore’s newest book, Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully, I asked Leah if she wanted to read it. Her answer was a big YES and so we snuggled on the couch and read the story of Freckleface Strawberry.

Freckleface is scared of dodgeball (and to be quite honest, who ever came up with the idea for this game anyway- I mean, did any of us really like dodgeball?).  She also fears the school bully Windy Pants Patrick. Freckleface, who attends the early bird program at her elementary school, now has a really big problem. It’s raining outside and that means one thing – heading into the gym to play dodgeball. And of course Windy Pants Patrick has the ball. Freckleface now has to figure out how to face both of her fears. Summoning the courage to stand up to the dodgeball bully, Freckleface Strawberry realizes that maybe the things she’s most afraid of aren’t all that scary after all.

First, I have to say that the illustrations, drawn by LeUyen Pham, are super cute, colorful and quirky. Freckleface Strawberry is a sweet, spunky character who has a vivid imagination (one of her favorite games is playing imaginary monster who rules the solar system). Even so, as with children of all ages, Freckleface has big worries (for this character her fears are directed towards dodgeball and school bully). The story itself encourages kids to face their fears and not be frightened of new experiences, which I think is a really nice message.

While at Book Expo America I was lucky enough to meet Julianne Moore. She was very nice (we quick chatted about how both our two children are the exact same ages apart) and she signed a copy of this book for my girls. I like this video, in which Julianne explains why she enjoys writing for children.

When I looked through the extensive author signing list on-line before BEA, I was so excited to see that Shannon Hale would be there promoting her new adult fiction book The Actor and The Housewife while simultaneously promoting her new YA fiction book Forest Born.

I read Austenland (see my review here) last year and quickly became of fan. After recently finishing Princess Academy (review can be found here) and Book of  Thousand Days (review coming soon) I just knew that I had to meet her.

Shannon Hale

Here is my “NO WAY” moment - the lovely Shannon holding up my signed copy of The Actor and the Housewife!

Shannon was really nice and told us that it looks like Austenland is going to be optioned for a movie! I am so glad to see how successful she is becoming and felt honored to meet her. Have you read a Shannon Hale book yet? If not, what are you waiting for?

To find out more about Shannon and her many books, please check out her website!

Who else did I get a signed book from? I got a copy of The Graveyard Book signed by Neil Gaiman, Holly Black’s upcoming book The Poison Eaters and Other Stories and even met Elizabeth Noble who was promoting The Girl Next Door which is due out this December.

Neil Gaiman Holly Black Elizabeth Noble

Tomorrow stop on by to find out which book bloggers I got to schmooze with (and if my box which I shipped from the convention center arrives on time, I’ll show you some of more of the book goodies I picked up while at BEA)!

Jun 01

Welcome friends, fellow bloggers and newbies to my blog. After fully  recovering from Book Expo America, I’m back all this week to tell you about it!

I love the saying “No Way” and I find myself blurting it out often. Sometimes I say it when my daughter comes home with a funny story from school, or when my girlfriend gives me the latest gossip about her in-laws. While at BEA, I had plenty of “No Way” moments and thought I would share them all with you. Each day I’ll post a little snippet of information about my two days in New York City. It was filled with hours of browsing through books, cocktail parties, blogger meet ups, interesting panels and endless bookish fun. My camera was on the fritz, so I didn’t get tons of photos, but enough to post a couple over the next few days.

My first “NO WAY” moment is when I snagged an ARC copy of the Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins!

Catching Fire ARC

Due in bookstores this September, Catching Fire is the second book in a trilogy which started with The Hunger Games (my review to be posted soon) which I just finished last week.

Along with Catching Fire, I was able to get a copy of The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane  signed by author Katherine Howe (Katherine was super gracious! I showed up a bit late for her signing and even though she had packed her bags and was on the way out, she still signed a copy for me)!

Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, The

There were also previews of a few books that will be coming out later this year/early next year. Unfortunately there weren’t any ARC’s of these titles up for grabs, but I am excited to tell all of you about them anyway!

First up is The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova, author of The Historian (which I read and reviewed here). I really enjoyed The Historian and cannot wait for her newest book to come out in January!! Plus, isn’t that book cover gorgeous?

The Swan Thieves: A Novel

And speaking of book covers, Audrey Niffeneger’s newest novel, Her Fearful Symmetry, doesn’t even have one yet - it’s completely under wraps until they get closer to the release date. Author of one of my favorite books, The Time Traveler’s Wife, I can’t wait to find out more about her newest title which is due in stores this September.

Her Fearful Symmetry: A Novel

I did get to see the wonderfully colorful drawings on the cover of The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner’s Dilemma, book three in Trenton Lee Stewart’s series for kids due out in October of this year. I read the first in the series (read my review here) and it will probably go down as one of my favorite reads this year.

The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner's Dilemma

Stop by tomorrow for another “NO WAY” moment when I tell you about how exciting it was to meet one of my favorite authors (hint: she writes YA and adult fiction – this lady is multi-talented)!

And stick around all week as I will be finishing up my series of BEA posts with a wonderful book giveaway!

Apr 13

I had the pleasure of meeting the very lovely Kate Jacobs, bestselling author of The Friday Night Knitting Club, Knit Two and Comfort Food at my local bookstore last week.

Kate spoke to the audience, answered questions about being a writer and read an excerpt from her novel Comfort Food, which is now out in paperback. I wrote a review of Comfort Food almost a year ago and really enjoyed the book and was excited to be able to meet her. If you are a fan of Kate Jacobs, you’ll be happy to hear that Kate is in the process of writing two new books, one of which will be about a mother/daughter relationship.
