What if you were in love with an immortal being who
everyone you knew was determined to destroy?

Syrie James, author of The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen and The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Bronte is out with a new book this month called Dracula, My Love: The Secret Journals of Mina Harker and let me tell you, it is a thrill ride from start to finish!

Dracula, My Love: The Secret Journals of Mina HarkerMina Murray is a young girl soon to be wed to childhood friend Jonathan Harker. While Jonathan is away on business in Transylvania, Mina is spending the summer with her best friend Lucy in the coastal town of Whitby, England. It has been awhile since Mina has heard from Jonathan and is worried that he will be delayed in coming home. But Mina finds herself distracted when she meets an attractive and  mysterious foreigner who recently arrived. At the same time, Lucy starts to sleep-walk and becomes quite ill. Before she knows it, Mina’s life goes topsy-turvy. There is talk of vampires in England and when Mina finds out the shocking truth about Jonathan’s delay and Lucy’s illness she realizes that there is more to the mysterious charismatic stranger than meets the eye.

Soon Mina is torn between her good and sweet Jonathan and the passionate, sexy mystery man who is really Count Dracula. When Jonathan, along with a group of men, decide that it is time to rid the world of Dracula once and for all, Mina has a terrible choice to make. Does she stay true to Jonathan or will she let her passionate feelings for Dracula conquer all.

Told from Mina’s perspective, Dracula, My Love is a fantastic read! James has written an excitingly dark tale with a romantic twist that is a page turner from start to finish. The author has given Dracula something that is missing in earlier novels – a heart and soul. I remember reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula years ago and realized after reading this new book that James has really added to the original story, giving it new life and an entirely fresh perspective. There was even a twist at the very end which I didn’t see coming but gave the story an satisfying conclusion. Like a vampire draining his latest victim, I sucked down every juicy detail of Dracula, My Love. I really enjoyed this novel and would highly recommend it.

The Secret Lives of PrincessesIt’s not very often that I get the opportunity to review an ARC of a children’s book, so when Sterling Children’s Books offered to send me a copy of their upcoming book The Secret Lives of Princesses I jumped at the chance. The Secret Lives of Princesses by Philippe Lechermeier and illustrated by Rebecca Dautremer isn’t due out until early June so I won’t be writing a review until then, but I have to tell you that I cannot wait to share my thoughts with all of you. The Secret Lives of Princesses is a quirky, beautifully illustrated book that my daughters and I have poured over numerous times since getting it. At over a whopping ninety pages, the book is filled with everything a little girl (and her mom) would love – whimsical characters, clever wordplay and illustrations that are just plain yummy.

To help promote The Secret Lives of Princesses, Sterling Children’s Books has offered ten packs of cool playing cards to ten of my readers. Just follow the directions on the cards and go to this website to win prizes.  There is even a Facebook page that you can become a fan of. If you are interested in receiving a pack of The Secret Lives of Princesses cards (and live in the US or Canada) then make sure you are one of the first ten people to comment on this post (and also leave a valid e-mail address)! Good luck!

Everyone knows about Cinderella, Snow White, and other fairy tale favorites. But there are many princesses who have been so well hidden, most of us never heard of them. All of that is about to change. The Secret Lives of Princessesby Philippe Lechermeier and Rébecca Dautremer is a treasure trove of incredible behind-the-scenes stories that reveal the secret lives of the world’s most mysterious princesses.

Good afternoon Saloners! I’ve got some cool bookish things to share with you all.

I met a really nice gal Denise not too long ago. She had just moved to this area and her youngest son is in Maya’s preschool class. What I didn’t know about Denise is that she too is a blogger and has just posted a really lovely interview with Kelly Corrigan, author of The Middle Place and her newest book Lift. Check it out at Denise’s blog Musings de Mommy.

I’ve been trying really hard not to purchase any new books and have been good over the past six months. But I kind of fell of the wagon recently and came home with these books.

Feb books 002

I bought Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer based solely on Susan’s great review. Then I picked up a copy of The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle since I will be reading it with my book club this month. After reading about author Maureen Johnson on the Book Blogger Con website, I found a copy of Suite Scarlett and decided to give it a try. And I am really glad I grabbed a copy of Little Bee by Chris Cleave, especially after reading Natasha’s thoughts on the book.

Speaking of great blog posts, I was intrigued by Dawn’s recent review of The Power of Half: One Family’s Decision to Stop Taking and Start Giving Back by Kevin and Hannah Salwen.  After reading and Tweeting Dawn’s insightful and honest review, I heard from a friend about the 200 Story Home Contest run by Khelly and Jerry Agee. It is a creative competition where you can submit artwork based on the theme of “home” and throughout the course of the competition they’re giving away cool prizes like Mini cars and charity donations. The grand prize is a mansion in Park City, UT (it’s unbelievably gorgeous) or $500,000 cash. And to top it off you pick your favorite charity and they’ll donate $50K to it. Pretty crazy, right! Check out their website to find out more about the contest and how to enter.

Lastly, check out what came in my mail last week!! Faithful Place: A Novel by Tana French! The book isn’t out until this summer and was so excited to get an ARC of it.

In non-bookish news, I took my oldest daughter out to see Alice in Wonderland yesterday afternoon. It was as I suspected, a totally whacked out version of the story and one that we both found enjoyable. It doesn’t hurt to have Johnny Depp, who I love, being the crazy Mad-Hatter!

Also, my husband and I FINALLY picked out tile backsplash for our kitchen! After bringing home lots of samples over the last few months, I finally found exactly what I wanted. I can’t wait to start putting it up so I can show all of you!

Dear Mr. Ferris,

As you may already be aware, your new book The Unnamed is the new “it” book in the book blogsphere. After reading countless glowing reviews of your book, I decided last night to pick up my ARC copy (one that I got while at Book Expo America last May) and started reading it. I’ve found your story to be extremely interesting and cannot wait to finish it and discuss it with other readers when I write my review. Today though I’m just going to ask a favor. Before I do so I need to give you a bit of background information.

The last couple years of my life have been a whirlwind of triumphs and sadness. I traveled halfway around the world to adopt my youngest child, who at the time was a beautiful nine month old girl who had spent the first couple months of her life in a Chinese orphanage and then foster care. Not even a year later my Mom became ill and passed away from cancer. Two weeks later, a lump was found in my breast and I was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. As you can see, it’s been a crazy couple of years. But none of this compares to the emotions and lack of control I feel when I watch my seven year old daughter have a seizure.

My daughter has Epilepsy. She was diagnosed a few years ago with this disorder that affects the electrical activity of her brain. It has been our hope that since her brain is still developing that she will grow out of having seizures, but after every seizure we ask ourselves is this something that she will have to live with the rest of her life? How will it affect her as a teenager? What will having Epilepsy do to her self esteem? And this is the reason I am writing to you, and any authors out there who decide to write, even just a few sentences as you did, about Epilepsy in their books. I worry that one day my daughter will read sentences like the ones I found in The Unnamed and not know how to react:

”He knew the sensation as an epileptic knows an aura. As an epileptic feels the dread of an oncoming seizure, he was crestfallen, broken-hearted, instantly depressed by what was now foretold.” *

According the www.epilepsyclassroom.com, the current, more appropriate term when describing someone who has this disorder is “person or child with Epilepsy” not Epileptic. You see, I don’t want my daughter to feel that her self worth is tied up with this scary disorder she has to deal with.  I spend time reading her picture books about children with Epilepsy. We talk about what a seizure is and how it doesn’t define her. I want her to know that she is so much more than a person with Epilepsy. She is a skiier, a swimmer, someone who can draw and play with her friends, a wonderful daughter and good girl, who just happens to have Epilepsy. She is not an Epileptic.

I know that obviously I am sensitive when it comes to this and don’t want you to think I’m picking on you. I am just trying to make it easier for my daughter, as she grows older, to know she doesn’t have to define herself by her medical condition and hope that I help to encourage people to change their mindset and terminology when it comes to Epilepsy.

So I just ask that you and any other author who reads this would just reconsider your terminology the next time (if in fact there is a next time) you write about Epilepsy.

Thank you.

Stephanie

* Please note that I read these sentences in an ARC copy of The Unnamed. I am unsure whether or not they are in the final copy of the book.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! In honor of this holiday all about LOVE, I figured I would write about some books that I would LOVE to get my hot little hands on! Most of these books will be released next month (YAY!) although you’ll see a few at the end of my list that will take a bit more patience. What books are you looking forward to reading this year? Are there any I need to add to my list?

Raven Stole the Moon: A Novel

First up is newest book by the author of The Art of Racing in the Rain, Raven Stole the Moon: A Novel by Garth Stein (Publisher: Harper Paperbacks – release date March 9, 2010). I really loved The Art of Racing in the Rain and am looking forward to see what this author has up his sleeve next.

Lift

I’m also looking forward to Lift by Kelly Corrigan (Publisher: Voice – release date March 2, 2010). I read her breast cancer memoir The Middle Place while I was going through my own cancer treatment and her words resonated with me.

The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag: A Flavia de Luce Mystery (Flavia De Luce Mysteries)

The Weed That Strings the Hangman’s Bag: A Flavia de Luce Mystery (Flavia De Luce Mysteries) by Alan Bradley (Publisher: Delacorte Press – release date March 9, 2010) is book two in the Flavia de Luce mystery series. I read the first book based on Carl’s recommendation and adored it!

The Girl Who Chased the Moon: A Novel

I read The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen last year and fell in love with her whimsical writing. I now am looking forward to her newest book The Girl Who Chased the Moon  (Publisher: Bantam – release date March 16, 2010)

The One That I Want: A Novel

Allison Winn Scotch is another author I discovered last year when I read her wonderful novel Time of my Life. She is out with a new book The One That I Want (Publisher: Shaye Areheart Books – release date June 1, 2010) this year.

Faithful Place: A Novel

I’m sure you all are looking forward to Faithful Place: A Novel too (Publisher: Viking Adult – release date July 13, 2010)! Since I haven’t yet read her second book The Likeness (I know, I know, what am I waiting for?) I can get a French fix before July.

Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games)

Admit it, you want a copy of Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games) by Suzanne Collins too (but you’ll have to wait until August to get it)! Publisher: Scholastic Press – release date August 24, 2010

Lastly, Sara Gruen will be publishing a new book this year called Ape House. I couldn’t find a book cover for it yet, but you can read about the book at the author’s website.

Last spring I had the pleasure of attending Book Expo America the largest publishing event in America. Having never met another book blogger face to face or attended a book conference, I was a bit nervous about going. It was the first time that a number of book bloggers were attending BEA and also one of the few times that they had a panel to discuss the impact of book blogging on the publishing industry in which I was asked to be one of the speakers.

This year, book bloggers will play an even more important role at Book Expo America, which takes place on May 25 – 27, 2010 at the Javits Center in New York City. To add to the excitement, a Book Blogger Convention will take place immediately after BEA on Friday, May 28th. A lot of you may be asking yourself whether or not it’s worththe trip into the city to attend BEA and Book Blogger Con and I’m hear to encourage you to come andjoin us for a whirlwind few days of bookish fun.

I was asked by the organizers of the Book Blogger Convention to share with my readers something about my experience at BEA last year. A few bloggers have already shared helpful tips on what to bring and wear to make the experience at BEA a great one. So instead of re-hashing the tips those great ladies shared with all of us, I’m hear to tell you to go to BEA and the Book Blogger Con because it’s FUN!

It’s FUN to meet celebrities (here’s a picture of Julianne Moore signing her children’s book for me)!

It’s FUN to meet favorite authors (here is the lovely Shannon Hale).

It’s FUN to hang out with other book bloggers (here I am hanging with Trish of Hey Lady! fame)!

It’s FUN to get the newest books way before the publishing date (here is my coveted copy of Catching Fire, which I got at BEA and then read while on a cruise last summer).

While browsing through Target’s book section (notice I said browsing – I didn’t actually buy any books as I’m really trying to read the ones I already have) I found quite a few novels with really beautiful, sunny covers. They all sound like breezy reads and would probably be perfect while sitting on my back patio, enjoying a nice big glass of ice tea. Since I live in the North East, I don’t think I’ll be getting that opportunity anytime soon. Oh well, one can dream!

If you were in warmer climates (let’s  pretend we are on some beautiful Caribbean island right now, shall we?) what books would you bring with you?

I was fortunate enough to get some really nice books in the mail this past week. All brightly colored and pretty, they makes me ache for springtime!

newbooks

Mrs. Darcy and the Blue-Eyed Stranger by Lee Smith is a collection of fourteen short stories which will be published on March 23rd. Thanks Algonquin Books for sending it my way.

I also received a copy of Get Lucky: A Novel by Katherine Center. I’ve only heard wonderful things about the authors other novels and can’t wait to read and review this one for TLC Book Tours around the April release date. Also from TLC came Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann. The book is a National Book Award Winner and is available now in paperback. I won’t be reviewing it until May but can hardly wait to start reading it.

In the meantime though I’ve been enjoying this lovely volume of Jane Eyre I received recently. I’ve already added the two disc Masterpiece Theater movieat the top of my Netflix list and can’t wait to snuggle on the couch and watch it once I finish the book. Have any of you seen this adaptation? I just adore Masterpiece Theater and will be sure to write up a post comparing the book to the movie adaptation.

Did you get any interesting books in the mail recently?

The Sunday Salon.com
Happy Sunday everyone! This is my first Sunday Salon of the new year. This has been a good week book-wise. I finished one book and started another and got a bunch of books in the mail over the last two weeks that I would like to share with you.

Even though all of these books came from publishers, some of them came unsolicited. I’ve landed on some distributions lists and get various books, some of which unfortunately I will probably never read. Sometimes I even get e-mails from publishers asking when my review will be up, even though I didn’t request the book!! Anyway, I thought I would share the book loot with all of you. First up is a book I did request, along with a little something extra! This is as close to book love as it is possible to get!

Bronte 003

Aren’t they just beautiful? I am participating in Laura’s All About the Brontes challenge (what, you haven’t joined it yet? Make sure to stop on by and do so now)! I contacted Penguin to get a copy of Becoming Jane Eyre by Sheila Kohler to read and review for the challenge. Imagine my surprise when I opened the package and found a not only the book I requested but also a copy of The Bronte Sisters: Three Novels: Jane Eyre; Wuthering Heights; and Agnes Grey! Now I really can’t wait to dig in!

Bronte 006

I also got a copy of Dream House by Valerie Laken which I will be reviewing later this month for TLC Book Tours. A copy of The Temptation of the Night Jasmine  by Lauren Willig landed in my lap. This fifth installment in Willig’s Pink Carnation series was just released in paperback. Also got a copy of Todd Wilbur’s Top Secret Recipes Unlocked: All New Home Clones of America’s Favorite Brand-Name Foods which should come in handy while cooking in my new kitchen. O, Juliet by Robin Maxwell also landed on my doorstop, along with The Rose of Sebastopol by Katharine McMahon.
