Last spring I had the pleasure of attending Book Expo America the largest publishing event in America. Having never met another book blogger face to face or attended a book conference, I was a bit nervous about going. It was the first time that a number of book bloggers were attending BEA and also one of the few times that they had a panel to discuss the impact of book blogging on the publishing industry in which I was asked to be one of the speakers.

This year, book bloggers will play an even more important role at Book Expo America, which takes place on May 25 – 27, 2010 at the Javits Center in New York City. To add to the excitement, a Book Blogger Convention will take place immediately after BEA on Friday, May 28th. A lot of you may be asking yourself whether or not it’s worththe trip into the city to attend BEA and Book Blogger Con and I’m hear to encourage you to come andjoin us for a whirlwind few days of bookish fun.

I was asked by the organizers of the Book Blogger Convention to share with my readers something about my experience at BEA last year. A few bloggers have already shared helpful tips on what to bring and wear to make the experience at BEA a great one. So instead of re-hashing the tips those great ladies shared with all of us, I’m hear to tell you to go to BEA and the Book Blogger Con because it’s FUN!

It’s FUN to meet celebrities (here’s a picture of Julianne Moore signing her children’s book for me)!

It’s FUN to meet favorite authors (here is the lovely Shannon Hale).

It’s FUN to hang out with other book bloggers (here I am hanging with Trish of Hey Lady! fame)!

It’s FUN to get the newest books way before the publishing date (here is my coveted copy of Catching Fire, which I got at BEA and then read while on a cruise last summer).

Not to much to report on the reading front this week. I’m struggling through Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (to be honest, I thought I would be enjoying it so much more and yet it just seems so fundamentally wrong to have an Elizabeth Bennet that is full of blood lust for zombies). I’m just not getting the appeal. I much prefer my non-violent Austen, thank you very much.

Pam & Jim: First Wedding Picture!Since my current read hasn’t caught my imagination, I’ve been spending a good portion of my free time knitting (after I realized that if I didn’t finish the sweater I’ve been working on for my oldest daughter, she is likely to grow out of it)! So instead of  reading at night I indulged in a bit of tv while working on the sweater. Turns out it was a great week for TV! I taped Oprah to see one of my most favorite bloggers Stephanie Nielson. Stephanie has an incredible story (she and her husband survived a terrible plane crash last year which left Stephanie in a coma for a few months – yes, I said months). Even though her life has changed drastically since the accident, Stephanie is a hard working, faithful mother who loves her family dearly. It was so nice to see her (and her husband) on the show. She truly is an inspiration.

I also have to give kudos to the writers of The Office, who pulled off the ultimate Pam and Jim wedding on Thursday night with a one-hour episode. The best part was at the end, during the wedding ceremony. I had no idea that I could laugh hysterically and cry at the same time. Well done.

I taped Parks & Recreation and The Vampire Diaries, both of which I plan on watching after I put the kids to bed tonight. Hope you all have a fabulous Sunday!

With the help of my wonderful husband Joe, I’ve finally made the leap to self-hosting my blog and getting my own URL! I’ve been working hard the last few days to get this site up and running and I hope you’ll take a look around and let me know what you think! From this moment on I will be posting here (as you can see, with the exception of a few comments and the YouTube videos, my blog has been imported here in full).

If you have left a comment for my Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters giveaway and you no longer see it in the comment section of that post, don’t fret. All comments are e-mailed to directly to me so I have them all on record!

There may still be some bugs I need to work out (and if I find a theme template I like better I may even switch this one out). I also still need to work on my blogroll (which didn’t seem to make it over to the new site) and would ask you to please update your blogroll (and bloglines or google reader) with my new URL www.stephanieswrittenword.com. Thanks so much!

In the meantime, it’s time to vote for your favorite blogs in anticipation for Book Blogger Appreciation Week! For the first time my blog was nominated and has now been shortlisted in a few catagories including BEST CHALLENGE HOST, BEST CHALLENGE and BEST COMMUNITY BUILDER. Thank you for nominating me (whoever you are). I really appreciate it!

Lastly, I’ll be headed to the body shop mid-week to drop off my car. While driving home from the party store (where I bought glow sticks for the neighborhood kids at our BBQ) I was rear ended by a large SUV. I wasn’t fully stopped when I was hit, but had been slowing down on the highway because I heard an ambulance siren (and wanted to make sure that it wasn’t going through the intersection ahead of me). The impact took my back bumper clear off the car, but luckily my daughter and I were unharmed. We need to pay a deductible to get the car fixed, so I told the kids that those glow sticks were probably the most expensive in the world!

Tomorrow is Friday, which means that I will be in NYC for the day undergoing the last of my surgeries (you don’t even want to know what time I need to be at Sloan Kettering tomorrow morning – let’s just say that it is early)!  I am this close to putting the last year of cancer treatments and surgeries behind me and am really excited to be on the last leg of this journey.

As I will need a bit of time to recover from my surgery, I won’t be checking my computer all that much over the next week. I have however scheduled some posts to go up, including my review of the new book The Magicians by Levi Grossman, my thoughts about reading (and watching) Sense & Sensibility and also an announcement about our next mini-challenge for Everything Austen, to be hosted late next week by the lovely Nicole over at Books and Bards (click here to find out a few details about it)!

In the meantime, I’ve left you picturse of the book stack next to my bed. I recently put these books on my night stand  to remind myself of the books I plan to read over the next few weeks.

TBR pile

It’s a lovely stack, isn’t it? I recently received Time of My Life and House & Home, both of which I will be reviewing for TLC Book Tours in September. The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Bronte came directly from the publisher and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is the August pick for my book club. As for The Lovely Bones, which I read a few years back, I’m tempted to try to read it again before the movie is released (yep, The Lovely Bones will be release in December by DreamWorks Pictures and you can see the trailer here)!!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will be back blogging soon.

Book Blogger Appreciation Week is back and it’s bigger and better this year! From the website:

Book Blogger Appreciation was started by Amy Riley of My Friend Amy in an effort to recognize the hard work and contribution of book bloggers to the promotion and preservation of a literate culture actively engaged in discussing books, authors, and a lifestyle of reading.

The first Book Blogger Appreciation was observed in the fall of 2008 and occurs every September. The week spotlights and celebrates the work of active book bloggers through guest posts, awards, giveaways, and community activities. Book Bloggers are encouraged to register their participation for inclusion in a database of book bloggers.

The second annual Book Blogger Appreciation Week will be taking place the week of September 14-18, 2009.

WHO Anyone who blogs about books is invited to participate.  In fact, we want everyone who blogs about books and reading to be a part of this week!
WHAT A week where we come together,  celebrate the contribution and hard work of book bloggers in promoting a culture of literacy, connecting readers to books and authors, and recogonizing the best among us with the Second Annual BBAW Awards.  There will be special guest posts, daily blogging themes, and giveaways.
WHERE Here at the new Book Blogger Appreciation Week Blog!  (Please note that this year there are three separate blogs and feeds—one for the main event, one for giveaways, and one for awards.)
WHY Because books matter.  In a world full of options, the people talking about books pour hard work, time, energy, and money into creating a community around the written word.  I, Amy, the founder of Book Blogger Appreciation Week love this community of bloggers and want to shower my appreciation on you!

Please register your blog by filling out the registration form! Registering ensures your inclusion in the BBAW 09 Database of Book Bloggers and enters you into the drawing for the BBAW 09 Grand Prize! Then click here to nominate your favorite book blog in various catagories!

When I joined the book blogging community almost three years ago, I thought I had found my new home. I had been blogging previously at a separate URL about the adoption of my youngest daughter from China for a while before switching over to a book blog. I love to read and write, so hey, this was the perfect forum for me. I decided to leave the adoption blogging community for two reasons – first, my adoption process was almost finished and I felt like there wasn’t all that much more to say on the topic and second, there were so many hurt feelings and controversies floating around that I knew it wasn’t the place for me. Take men and women (the majority who cannot conceive on their own) and tell them to wait three plus years to see their babies faces and you’ll know what kind of hurt feelings and bickering can go on. I no longer wanted any part of that.

If you’ve read my blog with any regularity, you’ll know that I’m not the type of blogger to write about controversial topics. This may stem from the fact that I am not one who likes confrontation and would rather let someone else hash it out. This isn’t to say I don’t have an opinion and now feel the need, as a panelist at BEA, to share it with you. I’ve commented over the last two days on various blogs with regards the the whole BEA panel controversy. To imagine that there would be a BEA panel controversy shocks me. Shouldn’t we as part of the blogging social media world want to work with each other to continue to grow our community?

There are people who didn’t feel the panel was a fair representation of the whole book blogging world. It wasn’t my intention to represent each and every one of us, because frankly that would be impossible. I went there to discuss the topic, which was strengthening relationships between bloggers and people in the publishing industry. I also felt it would be a good opportunity to connect with a lot of the bloggers who have been following me since my blog inception in 2006. Because book blogging is not only writing about books, but also developing relationships with my readers.

Let’s all be honest with ourselves. No matter which five people would have been picked to be on the panel at BEA, there would always have been someone who wasn’t happy.

blogpanel @ BEA 2009

I do receive review copies from authors and publishers alike and was asked to speak at BEA on ways in which we can make these relationships stronger. I do not receive unsolicited books and only take the books I intend on reading. In fact, of the books I’ve read this year, more than 70% half came from my own personal library. I make it clear to the publishers, book tour companies and authors I work with that I will give a fair review of the books I read. I write from the heart.

I guess this is what happens when you take a step out of your comfort zone and try something new. I’m not a public speaker or have an advanced degree in English Literature, but I am a book blogger and proud of it. I’ve seen my fellow book blogger feel the need to defend herself on her blog and am saddened over this whole situation.

I’m proud to have been asked to speak on the panel and for the opportunity to share my thoughts with all of you. I will keep blogging about books for as long as it interests me and hope that you will continue to follow along.

Before I get into my “NO WAY” post, I wanted to share with all of you a picture of myself from a few years ago. I do this purely for vanity, since all of the photos from BEA only show what I look like now – post cancer. I’m ok with the short hair and am getting used to my new after surgery body, but have to admit that I’ve cringed each time I’ve come upon my picture  on the blogs of all the lovely women I met over the weekend. So, indulge me for a bit while I show you what I used to (and hope to one day) look like:

OK, now I feel better. Back to the “NO WAYS!”

I have to admit that even though I was very excited at the opportunity to meet some of my publishing contacts (Hi Miriam & Valerie!) and the chance to get some new books, I was even more excited to meet some of my favorite bloggers!

Dawn from She is Too Fond of Books was nice enough to let me crash at her hotel on Thursday night. She was a really sweet person and I had fun hanging out with her at BEA and some of the cocktail parties that we went to(especially at Workman Publishers - they sure do know how to throw a nice party)!

OK, so here is the lineup of bloggers I met (aka the longest run on sentence in history):

Said a quick hi to Lenore and Stephanie at the Hachette dinner, spoke on a panel with Natasha, Amy, Julie, Candace, Dawn and Jen (more about that in my post on Friday) got to wave frantically at Lisa Roe when she showed up at our panel, ran into Books on the Nightstand’s Ann and Micheal in an elevator at Workman, got to walk around with Molly, spoke breifly with another Jenn, met Sheila, Amanda and Rachel and Emily (author of Last Night in Montreal) at my blog signing, stood on line with Carey and walked around some more with Nicole (who is my neighbor, but I was excited to see her anyway)!

And that’s not all! I finally (after e-mailing back and forth forever) got to meet Trish!

Trish & me!

Isn’t she cute with her hair in braided pig tails? I also got to sit with Gail and Jay at the Net Galley/Firebrand Booth. I’ve been following Every Day I Write the Book for quite a while and was happy to be able to meet Gail. Jay is a new too me blogger from Bookrastination and super nice guy!

Phew! If I missed anyone on that list I’m sorry!!

Paperback FrenzyPaperback Frenzy is an awesome site that has tons of book reviews, a search feature to find a specific book your looking for and categories to check out different types of books you may find interesting. There are also a whole bunch of contributors (including yours truly) who you probably already recognize around the blogsphere. But don’t take my word for it – check out the site here!

I think most of us are still shocked and saddened at having lost one of the best book bloggers around. When Raych over at books i done read asked for help in making buttons in memory of Dewey, I quickly sat down at my computer, opened Photoshop and came up with the buttons you see below.

dewey1p

If you would like to add one of these buttons to your sidebar in memory of Dewey and her blog The Hidden Side of the Leaf, you can do so in one of two ways:

Copy and paste one of these buttons into your blog the way you usually do

OR

E-mail me at wordblog(at)optonline(dot)net and I will e-mail you the jpg.

Also make sure to check out the beautiful buttons Bethany made in honor of Dewey.

I’m feeling two things right now – a little sore and lots of love!

Other than being a bit tired (and sore, did I mention sore?) everything went well with my lumpectomy yesterday. They removed three lymph nodes and it looks like there aren’t any cancer cells in them! My oncologist did say that they will be doing further testing on my nodes over the next week and sometimes will find cancer in them that they don’t catch during the surgery, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will be all clear! If they don’t find any, then I think I will be classified as having stage 1 breast cancer, which has something like a 95% curable rate! YEAH! I still don’t know what course of treatment I will be having, but will find out in the coming weeks. I have decided to blog about my cancer journey, in the hopes that I can help other people with this disease cope. If you are so inclined, you can visit it here “C” is NOT for Cookie. Otherwise, I will keep you guys up-to-date on this blog every once in a while.

In the WoodsI also finished In the Woods by Tana French while awaiting my surgery yesterday. I plan on writing up a review soon, but need time to mull over the ending. If you’ve read the book already, you know there are some plot threads that were not tied up in a neat little bow (something I usually like in my books) but overall thought that it was a really well written psychological thriller that kept me turning the pages well into the night. I read a little about the sequel and will try to get it from my library sometime soon.

I’m also feeling a lot of love! I’ve been presented with the I Love Your Blog award from AnnaNicole, Iliana and both the I Love Your Blog and the Proximidade! awards from the sweet Melody. Now that I’ve been bestowed these nice awards from the lovely ladies mentioned above, I need to pass it on!

Here are a few blogs that I really enjoy reading:

Care’s Online Book Club
Life and Times of a “New” New Yorker
Girls Just Reading
Jackets & Covers
Bloody Hell, It’s a Book Barrage!
Bookstack
I Smell Books

Thank you all for brightening my day! And, if I’ve ever left a comment on your blog, well that means I love you too! Smooches!
