Messing around Sunday Salon 01.24.10

I was fortunate enough to get some really nice books in the mail this past week. All brightly colored and pretty, they makes me ache for springtime!

newbooks

Mrs. Darcy and the Blue-Eyed Stranger by Lee Smith is a collection of fourteen short stories which will be published on March 23rd. Thanks Algonquin Books for sending it my way.

I also received a copy of Get Lucky: A Novel by Katherine Center. I’ve only heard wonderful things about the authors other novels and can’t wait to read and review this one for TLC Book Tours around the April release date. Also from TLC came Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann. The book is a National Book Award Winner and is available now in paperback. I won’t be reviewing it until May but can hardly wait to start reading it.

In the meantime though I’ve been enjoying this lovely volume of Jane Eyre I received recently. I’ve already added the two disc Masterpiece Theater movieat the top of my Netflix list and can’t wait to snuggle on the couch and watch it once I finish the book. Have any of you seen this adaptation? I just adore Masterpiece Theater and will be sure to write up a post comparing the book to the movie adaptation.

Did you get any interesting books in the mail recently?

No interesting books in the mail, but I’m discovering some of the goodies I’ve had on my shelves for far too long. Those books that have been sitting for a good long while are my #1 prey for 2010.

I’ve got a ton of unread books on my shelves too Andi. Unfortunately there are so many wonderful new books that I tend to forget what I already have! I really need to join one of those TBR challenges!

I just saw the McCann book at my local Hallmark store and it gave me pause – WHERE have I seen that before? and then I see it here, too! Hmmm.

Hey there! So fun to see Get Lucky on your list (and in your lovely photo)! I really hope you like it!

                    Katherine Center

And PS–I LOVE that Jane Eyre miniseries. I love the book, too–it’s one of my favorites. The miniseries is different, and racier, but it’s totally gripping. One of my favorite movie adaptations in this genre. That, and Emma Thompson’s adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. And, speaking of Austen, have your read Persuasion? Pure pleasure! An absolute page-turning treat.

Thanks so much for leaving a comment on my blog! I am completely engrossed in Jane Eyre at the moment and cannot wait to watch the miniseries, especially since I’ve heard such good things about it. Since Emma Thompson’s S&S is my favorite movie ever (I cry at the end EVERY SINGLE TIME) I am sure to enjoy watching Jane Eyre on my TV.

I actually hosted an Everything Austen challenge at the end of 2009 – over 200 participants and 600 reviews. Even though I only got to read one of her original works (Sense and Sensibility) I hope to read Persuasion sometime soon!

First, you’re going to think I’m a dork, but I couldn’t help but notice that nice looking stone under those books! Is that new kitchen countertops?

I absolutely LOVED Katherine Center’s “Everyone is Beautiful” on audio. I’m hoping and praying my library will pick up this one on audio as well. She just feels like one of us…a mom trying to find her way!

I own that Jane Eyre movie. It is fantastic. Toby Stephens is the perfect Mr. Rochester. There are a few liberties but overall it is a great movie. My husband and I are loving the stuff that Masterpiece Theater is coming out with lately. High quality and pretty true to the books. Hope you love it.

Must echo the many accolades for the PBS version of Jane Eyre! Absolutely fabulous!!
Persuasion was the last book I read in 2009 and for Everything Austen. Loved it! Anne Elliott is my new favorite Austen character – so mature and level headed.

Love that cover for Get Lucky. Makes me wish it were summer so I could dig out my flip-flops and put my snow shoes away!

No new books in the mail for me, but I’ve got a couple of new ARCs from work, as well as a few purchases. I need more time to blog about them!

BTW, I really like the new look here. Very sleek and tidy.

I love the movie adaption of Jane Eyre. The characters I think are good representations and I enjoyed it as much as the book.

The PBS version of Jane Eyre is one of my favorites and I’m looking forward to Emma this weekend.
